Join us for a fun and creative event, "Shirring & Self-Drafting Masterclass"! This workshop will take place on Monday 27th July or Sunday 9th August 10-5.
Do you want to learn how to self draft the ultimate summer dress, skirt or top for yourself or a child? Shirred dresses are the perfect look for summer and are a great introduction to self drafting. During this hands-on class, you will transform a series of rectangles into a perfect floaty summer garment. You’ll learn how to sew shirring including how to set up your machine for shirring and how to get the tension just right. The dress or top is finished off with a choice of different straps with the option to add tiers to the dress to make the final garment truly unique to your style. Or you can make a skirt with tiers & shirring at the top for extra comfort.
If you know how to use a sewing machine and have tried your hand at garment sewing, this workshop is a great skill-builder. I'll show you how to draft a sundress, top or skirt made to your own unique measurements & guide you through simple garment construction, with lots of tips & tricks to get great results for shirring & gathering.
By the end of the day you’ll have made a simple garment for yourself or a child- which will be a classic wardrobe staple over the summer months & for holidays. This adult only class is capped at six to ensure everyone gets the time and attention they need.
Bring your own fabric, matching thread and a couple of spools of shirring elastic. You'll leave the workshop with a fun summer dress, skirt or top that you or a child in your life can proudly wear!
Our sewing classes are relaxed and friendly, taking place in our lovely light studio in the heart of Horbury Town centre.
You will learn
* How to measure yourself & create a pattern to your measurements
* Cutting out your pattern & fabric accurately
* Sewing and finishing seams
*Tips for how to sew shirring, including setting up the machine and setting the right tension
*Tips for gathering tiers evenly
*Options to add your own design details
WHAT’S INCLUDED
The class includes expert instruction, use of the machines, tools etc, a handout with directions so that you can make it again at home plus tea, coffee & and biscuits! There will be a break for lunch which can be bought nearby or bring along with you.
YOU NEED TO BRING
* 1.5m -3m of lightweight fabric, such as cotton lawn, gingham, viscose, cotton voile or lightweight linen (depending on your bust size & the length that you want the finished dress/top/skirt)- we recommend that this is pre-washed prior to attending the class. (If you’re unsure how much fabric to bring and fabric recommendations, please contact me)

*Shirring elastic
* If you would prefer to bring your own machine, just let me know & ensure that you have the power cable, pedal & all the bits & pieces that came with it.
* Glasses if you need them - don't forget them!
SIZING
This is a pattern free class, which will teach you how to take your own the body measurements & draft a garment according to your own unique measurements.
SKILL LEVEL
Beginner/Intermediate
Suitable for adults who have never made a garment before but are confident using a sewing machine & can sew in a straight line, as well as those who may have previous experience and wish to use the class to learn new skills, gain confidence & inspiration & have fun.

*Please note - the studio is accessed via stairs & the toilets are downstairs. There is ample free off street parking outside the studio.
Refund Policy
Payment in full is required at the time of booking to secure your place. If you find that you can't attend 7 days or more before the start of your class you will recieve a full refund, less administration fees. Unfortunately, I cannot offer refunds for cancellations with less than 1 weeks notice.
