☀️ 10 FREE Women's Shorts Sewing Patterns to Stitch This Summer

Who else was excited to see The Great British Sewing Bee back on our screens last week? I certainly was!

No spoilers from me, but I loved the first Pattern Challenge, where the contestants had to sew a pair of shorts. There was plenty of topstitching, an elasticated back waistband and a flat front, with a faux fly—definitely not something I'd want to tackle against the clock!

Inspired by last week's episode (and the glorious weather we're enjoying in the UK), I've rounded up 10 FREE women's shorts sewing patterns that are perfect for summer.

Whether you're looking for a quick beginner-friendly project or something a little more challenging to develop your skills, there's something here for everyone. Best of all, shorts don't require huge amounts of fabric, making them ideal for using up those precious leftovers lurking in your stash.

You can watch the video ⬇️ or read about it in the blog below with links to download the patterns.

1. Myrtle Shorts – Mood Fabrics

If you're looking for a smarter pair of shorts, the Myrtle Shorts are a lovely option.

They feature:

  • High pleated waist

  • Wide waistband

  • Invisible zip

  • Front pleats

  • Back darts for shaping

I think these would look fabulous in stretch cotton sateen, linen or a lightweight suiting fabric. They're polished enough to wear out for lunch but still comfortable thanks to their relaxed fit.

2. Carica Poolside Cover-Up Set – Mood Fabrics

This is really two patterns in one—a matching top and shorts.

The shorts are wonderfully simple, using just two main pattern pieces and an elasticated waistband, making them a quick summer make.

Mood have added pom-pom trim to their sample... personally, I'd leave that off as I'd spend all day feeling it tickling my legs!

Perfect in rayon, lightweight linen or shirting fabrics.

Skill level: Beginner to confident beginner.

Features include:

  • Side zip

  • Snap fastening

  • Wrap front

  • Clean tailored finish

This would look fantastic in cotton twill, canvas or medium-weight linen.

These are probably my favourite beginner pattern.

9. Yoga Shorts – So Sew Easy

Sometimes simple is best.

These yoga shorts are sewn in stretchy knit fabric and come together with just a handful of seams, making them one of the quickest projects in this round-up.

The only downside is the limited size range, so if that doesn't work for you, try the Erinus shorts by Mood Sewciety, which are a bit more complex.

10. Pyjama Shorts set– The Assembly Line

Technically these are pyjama shorts, but who's to say they have to stay indoors?

They're wonderfully relaxed and feature:

  • Elastic waistband

  • Side seam pockets

  • Comfortable fit

Sew them in linen and I'd happily wear them in the garden all summer long.
